Over the last 125 years, Catholic schools have played an important part in the history of Sioux City. To observe the event, students from Sioux City's parochial schools will be participating Wednesday in a variety of events that exemplify the "service" aspect of Catholic education.
Pupils from Holy Cross-Blessed Sacrament Center, 3030 Jackson St., will be cleaning grounds, stuffing and folding envelopes and working in the church starting at 8 a.m. Bishop Heelan Catholic High School students will be serving food and assisting in food preparation from 10:45 a.m. to 1:15 p.m. at the Gospel Mission, 415 Bluff St.
A visionary in establishing Catholic education in Sioux City was the Most Rev. Edmond Heelan, second bishop of the Diocese of Sioux City, who died Sept. 20, 1948. It was his dream to create the first central interparochial co-ed high school in the Diocese of Sioux City.
To honor his memory, student representatives from every school will gather at 10 a.m. at Bishop Heelan's grave in Calvary Cemetery to lay flowers and hold a short memorial service. Students from Mater Dei-Nativity Center, 4243 Natalia Way, will be partnering with senior citizens from a Siouxland care facility, doing various activities from 1 to 2:30 p.m. Sioux City Journal
