If you live here you really don't have an excuse for not going to Confession [Bumped]

Two of this area's most prolific and respected bloggers, Adoro and Terry, coincidentally posted recently on difficulties in finding a place to go to Confession. Jeepers, you'd think with 230 parishes in our archdiocese, that should be no problem.

Well, the problem is that most parishes seem to make it available on Saturday afternoons between 3:00 and 5:00, before the Vigil Mass. In days of yore, the kids went to confession on Friday afternoons, I believe, and the grown ups lined up on Saturday mornings or during parish missions or Holy Week. Maybe the problem is that we don't see many lines any more so pastors aren't offering it more often.

But a major logistical problem with sin is that it just does not happen only on Friday nights. Sin is a 24/7 event, sadly, for most of us. Therefore, it is great when we can get dash on over to the morning Confessional line, encounter only a few ahead of us and get shriven of our sins so we can face the day with joy.

Therefor the Official Minnesota Catholic Directory (a two year old edition) was scoured for those parishes that offer Confession on a daily basis (bold type) or at other times than Saturday afternoons.

Tape this to your refrigerator along with the kids homework, your workout schedule or your weight loss stats. Isn't your spiritual health as important as other important parts of your life?

Confessions at the Cathedral are now 4-5:05pm Mon-Fri. I am a staff member. Please update!

Thanks for the great post!

p.s. Confessions on Saturday are from 3:30-5pm (or, whenever the lines are done). There are FOUR confessors and there is Eucharistic Adoration (in the gorgeous main sanctuary) during this time culminating with Benediction at 5pm!

Thanks for he info. I changed the M-Th data. But the post would be too long if I posted all the parishes with their "Saturday afternoon" times.

But its great to hear that the Cathedral needs four priests to give the sacrament. I know that at St. Agnes and Nativity, it is not uncommon to see three priests on duty.

And I'm sure there are other parishes where Confession is coming back into vogue.

According to the latest bulletin (found at http://www.sacredheartrobbinsdale.org/pdf/sacred-heart-bulletin08-17-08.pdf )
Sacred Heart in Robbinsdale actually has confession before daily mass Tuesday THROUGH Saturday inclusive, and not just the three days listed there. The new pastor Fr. Bryan Pedersen is continuing the rigorous schedule of the last Pastor Fr. Creagan, God bless them both.

So off I go to Sacred Heart this morning! Yes, sin IS 24/7.

Thanks for the updates about the Cathedral, but it is not Mon-Thurs, it is Mon-FRI.

Thanks!

And Father Creagan is now at St. Jóe´s in West St. Paul. Father Pederson was great in South Saint Paul. We miss him.

I think you are going straight to heaven for this. Gosh - I wish I lived in a church - I need to go to confession every day it seems.

There's daily confession M-F, 3:15 - 4:15pm at the Chapel of St. Thomas Aquinas at the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul.

Thanks, Anon., I've added the UST Chapel hours. I assume that probably that is only when school is in session.

Thanks, Janice.

I've added it to the list.

Um, I need to correct the record. I did not post on difficulty in finding Confession. At my parish, Confessions are offered 3 times per day, and twice on Saturdays, any time by appointment, including on Sundays between Masses. (I've seen it happen)

My post from that day several months ago was not about the availablity or lack therof, but about the need of us to receive Communion while in a state of grace.

I was also indicating a moment I was rushing to get to Confession before they ended as my parish changed the time from after Mass to before it, which is a problem with my regular work hours. (ie I can no longer normally attend the evening Mass, nor can I get to evening Confession).

I just don't want anyone to be misled on what I actually stated or what that post was about.

In re: the Cathedral, there are a few additional times during Lent 2010.

March 20, 10 am, Communal penance service; please note that this is NOT a general penance service but features individual confessions with bunches of priests at some point in the middle of the service.

March 29, 30 and 31: Confession from 3-5 and 7-8:30 pm.
