Pope names local woman as consultant to Pontifical Council for the Family

Pope Benedict XVI named Teresa Stanton Collett, a professor at the University of St. Thomas School of Law in Minneapolis, to serve the Pon­ti­fi­cal Council for the Family as a consultant. Cardinal Sean O’Malley of Bos­ton and four other U.S. Cath­olics were also named to council positions.

Collett has focused on the importance of protecting human life and marriage and lectures on marriage, religion and bio­ethics.

The Vatican announc­ed the ap­point­ments Sept. 30. Ten married couples from 10 different countries were named members of the council. Pope Benedict chose John and Claire Grabowski as U.S. representatives. John is a moral theology professor at The Catholic Uni­ver­sity of America in Wash­ing­ton, D.C. Frank and Julie LaBoda, of Wisconsin, are among 18 consultants named to the council. The LaBodas are international coordinators for the Retrou­vaille program for couples experiencing difficulty in their marriages.
