New CEO appointed to Catholic Charities

Paul Martodam, CEO of Catholic Charities Community Services in Phoenix, was appointed CEO of Catholic Charities of St. Paul and Minneapolis by Archbishop John Nienstedt Nov. 9. Martodam will be formally introduced Dec. 3, during Catholic Charities’ annual meeting. He will begin his duties Jan. 1.

A native of Minnesota, Martodam previously served Catholic Charities in the dioceses of Crookston and St. Cloud before becoming CEO in Phoenix in 1993. While in Arizona, Catholic Charities has increased annual revenues from about $8 million to more than $35 million, according to a release from Catholic Charities of St. Paul and Minneapolis, which serves about 35, 000 people with an annual budget of $36 million.

Martodam will be the first non-priest CEO since a 1977 merger of multiple Catholic social service agencies created Catholic Charities of St. Paul and Minneapolis. He replaces Robert Spinner, who has served as interim CEO since June 2009, when Father John Estrem resigned.

Martodam holds degrees from St. Louis University and St. Cloud State University. He is a member of the board of trustees of Catholic Charities USA and served on the board of the Council of Accreditation of Children and Family Services and is a founding member of Protecting Arizona’s Family Coalition.
