It surprises me that Mary is such a stumbling block for many Christians, mostly non-Catholics, but not only. For the greater part of the history of the Church, except for a few cranks, her role was assumed. From the time Christ handed his mother over to John, and John to her, the Christian community took her as their own. All the poetry, hymns, icons, statues celebrating her over the centuries. Even the Reformers, Luther himself, sang her praises.
