Madison's Bishop Morlino Has Vision For Replacement Downtown Cathedral

.
Bishop Robert Morlino has a vision for a new cathedral for the Diocese of Madison that combines spiritual, charitable and philosophical missions in a new building on the site of the fire-ravaged St. Raphael.

Space for 1,000 to worship, a center from which to reach out to the needy and a place to debate ethics with legislators from the nearby Capitol would be embodied in Morlino's cathedral. "We would talk about issues of the day and pronounce Catholic values," he said of fostering ethical discussions with lawmakers.

"That's what's possible in a downtown church that doesn't seem to be possible elsewhere," he said Wednesday at a meeting in Sun Prairie. "There's no place to do it downtown apart from the place where the cathedral is."

Bishop Morlino said the diocese expects to receive a settlement of about $6 million from its insurer for the destroyed cathedral, although a final agreement has not been reached. The settlement is meant to be the cost of building a church like the 150-year-old St. Raphael, which was destroyed by an arson fire in 2005.
