New name coming for College of St. Catherine

School officials said several new names are being considered and all of the suggestions include "St. Catherine" and "University." School administrators have until August to present its recommendation to the board, along with a plan to implement the name change.

The College of St. Catherine is soon to become a university.

The Board of Trustees voted unanimously Monday night to approve changing the name of women's Catholic college on Randolph Avenue in St. Paul to include "University" in its title.

School officials said several new names are being considered and all of the suggestions include "St. Catherine" and "University." School administrators have until August to present its recommendation to the board, along with a plan to implement the name change.

The final decision on a name will be announced in August, with the new name taking effect on June 1, 2009, said Julie Michener, a school spokeswoman.

Whatever the new name is, it will retain St. Catherine's core identity. Catholic, women and liberal arts will remain the centerpiece of the newly named institution, officials said.

The name change was approved by the board as part of a strategic plan to advance the college of 5,238 students by more accurately reflecting the comprehensive and complex nature of St. Catherine's and to position the institution for national pre-eminence.

"The name change will enhance the college's standing as the largest, most comprehensive college for women in the United States," said President Andrea J. Lee. "This is an historic and important step in laying groundwork for the future while strengthening our century-old tradition as a world leader in educating women to lead and influence." StarTribune
