Retired Auxiliary Bishop Gumbleton of Detroit to Speak Tuesday at the Basilica

.
Retired long-time controversial Auxiliary Bishop Thomas Gumbleton of Detroit will speak on "Is There Room for Me in this Church?" on Tuesday, Oct. 3, 7:00 p.m., at the Basilica of St. Mary. He is renowned in liberal circles for his statments on issues of peace, justice issues and inclusion issues. Many of his positions are opposed to Church teachings.

Church practice does not seem to call for discipline of bishops and priests who speak contrary to Church teachings and believes. But his resignation letter upon his 75th birthday was accepted upon its receipt in Rome.

"Is there Room for Me in the Church? Who among us has never pondered this question? Sometimes we think ourselves unworthy to be a member of the Church. Sometimes we wonder how we can belong to the same church as those other people. Sometimes we question the teachings of the Church, and yet we are drawn back, time and time again confident that there is "Plenty Good Room" in our Church."

There IS room for everybody in the Church. But there are rules. I will be at the Basilica in the "undercroft" (crypt, but I call it a basement) and I invite others to join me and perhaps we may be able to present viewpoints opposed to what we hear that evening.
