Don?t tell the Taxpayers League of Minnesota, but the most powerful interest group in Minnesota politics is Minnesota Citizens Concerned for Life (MCCL). For decades, the group has successfully determined who will be candidates, and rewarded its friends and punished its enemies. At the Legislature, for better or for worse, when the MCCL decides it wants something, pro life legislators almost always comply.
The MCCL has now decided it really wants its "Abortion Regulation Act," which would require more data on judicial rulings relating to minors sidestepping the parental notification law and require doctors who perform abortions to have admitting privileges at nearby hospitals. Most controversial of all, the proposed act would reverse Doe v. Gomez, the 1995 Minnesota Supreme Court case which requires that state health programs for the poor must pay for abortions like other medical procedures. [Snip]
Politics in Minnesota -- The Minnesota Public Affairs News Service -- has a Weekly Report newsletter that is normally available by subscription only. They now let people view past issues certainly in the hopes that they might subscribe. It is a very good newsletter.
