Holy Spirit Sisters from Africa and India recently visited the Sioux City Diocese.
Sister Maria, superior of the Indian region, made her fourth trip to the United States and the diocese. She was first here from 1970 to 1975 when the Holy Spirit Sisters were trying to start a community in India.
"The priests of the Diocese of Sioux City helped us so we could start our community in India," said Sister Maria. "The priests and bishops were and are very friendly, approachable and helpful."
She added that Bishop Greteman helped her and the other sisters with her get settled in Sioux City and made sure they were taken care of. According to Sister Maria, there are now 169 Holy Spirit Sisters in the Indian region.
Sister Maria was able to visit the Holy Spirit Indian Sisters serving in Sioux City and Carroll while she was in the diocese. Four of the sisters work at Holy Spirit Retirement Home in Sioux City and seven work in Carroll at St. Anthony Nursing Home.
"It is a mission," said Sister Maria. "The sisters are here to share the love and concern that they brought from India. The people really need our love and care. While the sisters are away from home and parents, they share their love with the people in the retirement home."
Sister Inviolata, superior for the African region, made her first trip to the United States and the Diocese of Sioux City. "I have gotten a good impression, especially of the simplicity of the people," said Sister Inviolata. "They are very loving and welcoming. When I see how simple the bishop is, it really gives me a very good impression."
In the African region, there are 215 Holy Spirit Sisters. There are currently six of them serving in Willey and three in Webster City. One sister, Sister Melania, arrived close to the same time as Sister Inviolata and will serve in Willey for two years. [snip] Catholic Globe
