A Good Shepherd --- Bishop Carlson of Saginaw Reports on His Chat With the Pope

Bishop Robert Carlson of Saginaw, formerly from StP-M and Sioux Falls, reports in the Catholic Report on last weeks visit to Rome whice included an unplanned visit with Pope Benedict. The Bishop has appointed himself as Saginaw's Vocations Director and reports that since his arrival the dioceses's seminarians have increased from zero to probably 20 by this Fall. The Pope wanted to know his secret method.

In his interview with Catholic Report's David Hartline, the Bishop added: "We live in a society that is focused on rugged individualism and relativism. As an immigrant church we learned to become like everyone else. Well, now its time to become counter cultural. I started an Apologetics course for seniors at all of our Catholic high schools this year. Young people are going to have to know the truth when they get to college. They are going to have to answer the questions posed to them from the Campus Crusade for Christ. Also they are going to have to be able to defend their faith from pop culture junk like the DaVinci Code and the Gospel of Judas. We are also helping the adults to understand their faith as well. In our diocese, we have over 60% who are unchurched. We can’t evangelize until we know our own faith."

Isn't it wonderful that we have a Pope who is so in tune to what is going on that when a Bishop from a minor diocese comes to town, he is aware of it and calls him in to hear of his successes (and no doubt problems were discussed also)! Read More
