Fillmore County Relay's lighted path reminds people of cancer battle

Fillmore County's Relay for Life's overnight walk to raise money for the American Cancer Society and cancer research took place in Spring Valley Friday through Saturday morning near the downtown area.

Plans had been in the making for months. The expert organizational skills of those involved and the outpouring of volunteer help from the Spring Valley businesses and local residents allowed hundreds to spend time reflecting on the battle with cancer as money was raised.

On Friday morning preparation of the luminarias was undertaken by workers who spent hours in the scorching mid-day heat filling approximately 6,000 luminarias. The bags with names of people who had been touched by cancer (living and deceased) were then moved into place along . on Friday, a survivors' tea in the parish hall at St. Ignatius Catholic Church for those who have faced cancer and won was held. Time was spent sharing victories, giving information, and encouraging each other to rejoice in life.

At the break of dawn many of the teams of walkers headed up the hill to the St. Ignatius Catholic Church for a breakfast sponsored by the Knights of Columbus and the Wykoff Lions Club.
