Paulist Father Michael Martin has become a quarterback of sorts.
The pastor of St. Lawrence-Newman Center in Minneapolis recently “took a snap” from one of his fellow Paulistpriests and is looking to advance the cause of canonization of former University of Minnesota football player, Faribault native and Heisman Trophy winner Bruce Smith, who won the trophy in 1941 and died of cancer in 1967.
But it may take a Hail Mary pass to make it happen. Canonization is rare in any case, with most cases fizzling long before the tedious, decades-long process reaches a conclusion.

“I think he’d be the perfect (patron) saint for famous people — stars — because be was humble, which is a lesson they need to learn,” Father Martin said. “We’ll see what happens. It’s one step at a time. . . . It really does depend on God. God has to come through and show a sign that God wants Bruce Smith to be a saint and wants us to know it.” The Catholic Spirit
