Archbishop Nienstedt joins anti-abortion demonstration

.
[Clayton Emmer, former Minnesotan, now a Los Angeles resident, spent a considerable amount of time at the St. Paul demonstration with camera and tape recorder. You can see and hear the results here!]

Hundreds of people gathered outside the Planned Parenthood clinic in St. Paul's Highland Park neighborhood today for an annual Good Friday demonstration by opponents of legalized abortion. It was one of the biggest crowds outside the clinic in years.

Marchers lined up for blocks along Ford Parkway, drawn in part by a brief appearance by Archbishop John Nienstedt. [Brian Gibson of Pro-Life Action Ministries, the organizers of the event, estimated that the appearance by the archbishop was a major reason why the total day's attendance for the seven hour long demonstrationi was estimated to be over 2,000.]

Abortion opponent Megan Noll, of South St. Paul, said she was pleased to see the head of the St. Paul-based archdiocese join the demonstration. It was the first appearance by an archbishop at the event in recent memory.

"I think it makes a huge difference, I think this is probably the biggest crowd I have ever seen here," Noll said. "It's just good to have a good leader who's willing to support life and to see the people rise to the occasion and support him in that."

One of the organizers of the annual demonstration also credited the election of Democrat Barack Obama for part of the enthusiasm outside the Highland Park clinic today. Obama said earlier this month that, although he wants to reduce the occurrence of abortion, he supports legalized abortion.

Brian Gibson is the executive director of Pro Life Action Ministries in St. Paul.

"When there's been a change of power, and an administration like we have now, which is very pro abortion, pro life people want to come out and show support, so I think that's part of it, too," Gibson said.

But Planned Parenthood officials said they think opposition to legalized abortion is waning. During the height of today's demonstration, the number of Planned Parenthood supporters in front of the St. Paul clinic rivaled the size of past Good Friday protests by abortion rights opponents.

Some Planned Parenthood supporters said they were there partly in response to an incident in January, when an abortion proponent rammed his SUV into the clinic's front door. It is the only Planned Parenthood clinic in Minnesota that provides abortions, and the organization has since installed barriers on its entryway to stop other vehicles.

Sarah Stoesz is CEO of Planned Parenthood Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota and said she was grateful for the show of support outside the clinic.

"I don't believe that there's a rising tide of cultural conservatism in the country," Stoesz said. "I think that tide is retreating now, and I think what you see in the large number of people that have come out to support planned parenthood and women's reproductive health is exactly that. A lot of support for what we do."

St. Paul police said today's demonstration and counter demonstration were peaceful. Minnesota Public Radio

[Normally the march extended from the west end of the Planned Parenthood property maybe 150 feet up to the east end of the Dairy Queen/former Burger King property. Yesterday it went up to Howell Street, upwards of 1,000 feet or more. By 9:30, there must have been 300-400 or more pro-life demonstrators present. In a discussion about the wonderful attendance with a long time pro-life Catholic woman who has been active in both demonstrations and the adoption movement, she said that this was the first time that an archbishop had ever attended the Good Friday demonstration.

You can listen to the Archbishop's meditation HERE.

Three other Catholic priests also offered prayers during the morning portion of the demonstration: Fathers Andrew Cozzens from the Chancery, Kevin Finnigan from Divine Mercy in Faribault, Anthony Vanderloop from St. James and St. Francis de Sales in St. Paul and James Livingston, chaplain at North Memorial Hospital in Robbinsdale.

The St. Paul Police Reserve was out in full force, with a couple of mounted riders even. But all was quiet. Two or three years ago, Planned Parenthood decided to put on their own demonstration. That takes place in front of the Edina Realty building to the west of their property. They, maybe 100 or so, were mostly dressed in pink and carrying "I 'heart' Planned Parenthood" signs.]

Oh, forgot to mention, I was there in the early afternoon and spotted Father Van Sloun of St. Stephen's in Anoka on the pro-life side! He did not speak while I was there but marched in solidarity.

Is there any kind of regular (e.g. weekly, etc.) demonstration / rosary at this abortuary? We'd certainly like to know so that we can join in.

I know there are regularl groups and individuals who show up there to pray and some, who are qualified, to practice outreach with people intent on keeping appointments for abortions there.

Some people just come by themselves.

I'm pretty sure there is a regular group on Saturday mornings, but I don't know the exact time. But around 10:00 a.m., I would guess.

I'll make a point of check with the human life center located on the corner west of PP and see if they know the schedules for permanent groups.

Anon: There is a regular Saturday at 10:00 a.m. vigil before the abortuary in Robbinsdale MN the address there is: 3821 W Broadway. There are usually people at the Highland Park sporadically throughout the day on Saturdays but I don't think there is an ongoing organized vigil there anymore. You could also check with www.plam.org
