Terry of Rome-ing Catholics has some nice thoughts on the Hawthorne Dominican sisters who operate the Our Lady of Good Council Free Cancer Home in St. Paul. He invites you to visit them to see what the life of their sort of contemplative nun is like.
To this day the Sisters do not accept funding from the Government or any institution such as the United Way. Because of this they remain free from the restrictions these institutions may impose. What is more astonishing is that the Sisters do not even ask for or accept any funds or property from the patients or their families! They live entirely dependent upon Divine Providence!
The vocation is a tough one though. The Sisters are what used to be referred to as “semi-cloistered”, that is, they live where they work and they rarely ever leave the cloister. They essentially live a contemplative life. The patients are their family, a part of the community. Their work is their prayer and their prayer is their work. But like I said, it’s a tough life. It takes a generous soul to commit and persevere in such a vocation. However I am convinced I have met quite a few saints in that order, and not a few contemplative souls.
