Duluth's Benedictine Health Care System "Redefines Affordable Housing"

n a property management deal announced Thursday by SMDC Health System and championed by local fair-housing advocates, two Duluth nonprofit agencies will take over 31 SMDC-owned apartments in eight buildings that border the Benedictine health-care system's Central Hillside campus.

The aged but well-maintained buildings are mostly triplexes and brick row houses. Together, they are valued at about $3.3 million.

SMDC will lease the properties to Center City Housing Corp. and Women's Community Development Organization for $1 annually for the next 20 years. Rents should bring in nearly $190,000 a year for both agencies, SMDC officials said.
