Winona Publisher Reaches Out to Children

Doraann Goodman had never seen -- much less eaten -- a fig before Tuesday, so it was little wonder the 11-year-old expressed doubts about taking a bite of the wrinkled, dried, funny-looking fruit.

But curiosity trumped disgust and with squinted eyes and crinkled nose the Holy Names Elementary School sixth-grader took a nibble.

"It looks nasty, but I guess it tastes all right," Doraann said. "I don't think I could have lived in Bible times. I'd have starved."
